Achmea shares how, after a five-year migration program, the company has fully transitioned to the cloud. The organization is saying goodbye to physical data centers and mainframes and now primarily operates on Microsoft Azure. Notably, this transformation was largely carried out by Achmea’s own teams under its own direction and governance.

In addition to the cloud migration, Achmea has significantly modernized its Pega platform. Technical debt was eliminated, the infrastructure was renewed, and 68 applications are being upgraded to the latest Pega version. Strategic partner HCLTech supported this transformation with specialized expertise and scale.

For the adoption of AI, Achmea has chosen an approach based on clear guardrails and boundaries. This enables teams to innovate quickly while maintaining privacy, compliance, and risk management standards. Human oversight remains essential, particularly in sensitive processes such as claims handling.

La Croix’s key takeaways for other organizations are to establish strong platform governance, create room for innovation within clearly defined frameworks, and keep software and security patches continuously up to date.
